Winter weather conditions are not always optimal for working outdoors, but the logs are better harvested whilst the trees are in a stage of no growth. This helps enhance the already tough and fine-structured material. The logs are also dryer and therefore lighter weight, making it easier to transport the logs through rural areas. They are stockpiled at the riverside, waiting for the summer months, when they are preserved and transported by water to the sawmill and finally to dry.
